Kate makes her first jump!

Saturday, October 23, 2004 three days after her 18th birthday, Kate Briggs
finally takes to the skies on her first jump! Kate has worked
as a manifester at the DZ for over two years. The full event
is recorded on DVD available for viewing at the DZ, but chronicled
here are the highlights:
-
Kate actually showed up ON TIME at the DZ.
-
Kate's great grandmother
mentions that she would have done it 70 years ago. Then she
says "It'll be alright."
-
Several family members remark
how since she was 2 years old they knew she'd do something like
this.
-
Kate declined a cappuccino from
her mom, fearing she'd "pee on myself."
-
Bill trains Kate for the jump
and remarks, "It'll be alright."
-
Kate gears up and talks to
Barbie on the toy phone.
-
Kate mentions she thinks that "It'll be alright."
-
Jak gives the plane ride zero G
and uncharacteristically says: "That was FUN!"
-
Kate leaves the plane and goes
into freefall, does well, shakes Jen's hand in freefall, looks
casually at her altimeter, gets ready to pull, then tells Jen in
freefall, "I can't find the ripcord!" As if she expects help
from Jen. But she finds it and pulls anyway on time.
-
After the canopy opens, Kate
asks Bill, "What did I do wrong?"
-
The two land the canopy, and the
first thing out of Kate's mouth is, "Does my hair look okay?"
I thought it looked alright.
-
When asked, was it what you
expected? Kate replied, "It was... CALMER than I thought it would
be."
I guess,
it was alright.
